Entries for the 2019 As We Are Art Award now open!
As We Are is very pleased to officially open entries for the 2019 As We Are Art Award. A big, big thanks to As We Are community and major supporters Lotterywest, Nulsen Group, My Place and the City of Perth for getting behind this important WA arts initiative and supporting WA artists who have an intellectual disability.
The annual As We Are Art Award is a state-wide art award and exhibition open to all Western Australian artists who have an intellectual disability (aged 18+). Entries can be in any art medium, though works are limited in size and weight: 1m x 1m and up to 5kg for two-dimensional works, and 0.5m3 and up to 10kg for three-dimensional works. In 2019, artists will be invited to submit one entry, with all entries submitted the artists’ original works and produced in the 12-month period prior to the entry closing date. For the second year running, the 2019 exhibition is being held at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre, 21 Mounts Bay Road, Perth, in their Level 2 Main Foyer. Click here to download a copy of the exhibition poster.
Entry is a two-part process. Firstly, entrants are required to submit a completed Entry Form, and secondly, entrants are required to deliver their artworks approximately three weeks later (see ‘Kay Dates’ section below).
In 2019 there will be seven art award categories, each with a respective cash prize of $500, with all entries judged by a professional, independent visual arts panel:
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Award (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander entrants only) – Sponsored by Succession Matters
- Contemporary Art Award – Sponsored by Tunbridge Gallery
- David Guhl Award for Artistic Excellence – Sponsored by Aurenda and Gallagher Bassett
- Regional Art Award (Regional entrants only) – Sponsored by Melo Velo
- Rosalind Lewis Award – Sponsored by the Department of Communities
- Stephen Delower Memorial 3D Award (3D entries only) – Sponsored by My Place
- People’s Choice Award (as voted by the public) – Sponsored by the Victoria Park Centre for the Arts and Kent Street Gallery
The judges will also award up to ten Certificates of High Commendations for outstanding entries. Recipients of the the Judges’ High Commendation will each receive a a $50 framing voucher from Picasso Art + Framers. Picasso Art + Framers have also kindly offered a 30% discount on framing to all As We Are artists, so please be sure to take advantage of this great offer!
All participating artists and their support network are invited and highly encouraged to attend the exhibition opening and award presentation evening. This is a fun and celebratory evening, with music, drinks, nibbles and a good time is had by all. The majority of sales historically have happened on the opening night, and buyers along with the general public, really enjoy the opportunity of meeting the participating artists.
