Our Principles

As We Are is founded upon the following guiding principles:

We support people with intellectual disability to be in charge of their lives by exercising choice and control. Our projects and programs are designed in response to the needs of the individuals and communities with whom we engage. By developing a meaningful arts practice, our artists are able to express themselves and have a voice, connecting them with the broader community.

We promote and uphold the human rights of people with intellectual disability and we respect their competencies, choices, needs and ambitions. By putting their aspirations front and centre, we stay relevant to them and their community.

Artistic Potential

We work long-term and intensively to unlock people’s creative potential by providing pathways that cater for those with professional aspirations as well as those that engage recreationally.

Collaborating will create new and exciting opportunities for artists with intellectual disability locally, nationally and internationally. This will mutually benefit the individuals, communities, organisations and governments we partner with. Learning from each other and open to new approaches, our partnerships aim to have a lasting impact.

Equal Opportunity

People with intellectual disability have the same rights to access opportunities to engage, participate and work in the arts as other Australians. We commit to providing the necessary means to enable them to exercise these rights.

Complementing our high standards of excellence in delivery, there is great joy in the way our artists make and present work; wellbeing is as important as professional artistic development.

We aim to leave a legacy of inclusion by challenging and transforming assumptions about intellectual disability in the wider community.
